Restoration story: A beautiful architect’s chest becomes a statement coffee table

We love a challenge here at Second Chance Vintage and none have come more challenging than the restoration of an architect’s chest for the home of a Manchester based Creative Director. He, like us, saw the potential in an unloved and well-worn chest that we discovered at an auction, and he gave us the remit to just restore it with a view to it retaining as many original features as possible and becoming a statement table for his lounge.

As you can see from the pictures, the chest had seen better days. The hardest thing about the restoration was replacing the top, which took some seriously tough sourcing. Once found, we took our time treating, polishing and putting some genuine love and skill into making the piece truly spectacular.

Key to the restoration was retaining the character of the original piece. Cleaning up the maker’s mark, ensuring the character of the piece was not lost but equally making it feel genuine and authentic in its restoration… essentially we wanted to turn back the clock on an unloved piece and give it a restore that would genuinely make jaws drop when people saw what it originally looked like.

Take a look at the pictures below, and if you’re looking for a similar statement piece, then simply get in touch. We love a restoration challenge.
