Victorian Tippler or Tipper Toilet – Ducketts of Burnley

£125.00

Fantastic Salt Glazed, Victorian Tippler toilet base manufactured by Ducketts of Burnley in the mid 19th century.

Tippler toilets (sometimes known as the long drop) were used in Victorian outhouses.

There was a tilting bucket below and wastewater from the kitchen sink would flow into it. Once the tipper bucket was full of the waste wate, it would tilt and empty all of its unpleasant contents into the pipes up to 6 feet below, hence the name “long drop”.

It was very noisy and would rumble when ready to tilt, giving anyone seated at the time quite a fright, especially children.

This unusual piece of history would make an amazing garden feature or planter, or possibly be adapted to make a seat or a table.

There is a crack on one corner (please see photos) however it is still in great condition for its age and we are open to reasonable offers.
